Questions
How do I play?
Each otter holds a clam with a number. Drag from an otter to a neighbour to tie a kelp rope between them. Do it again for a double rope, and a third time to untie it. You can also tap one otter and then the other, or tap a rope to change it.
Ropes run straight across or down, never cross, and two otters share at most two. When every otter has its ropes and they’re all tied into one raft, they fall asleep. Tap the ? button at the top left to see the rules again, and use Undo and Restart below the board.
What do the numbers on the clams mean?
By default each clam counts down: it shows how many more ropes that otter needs, and a tick when it has them all. If you’d rather see each otter’s total, open Rafts (the grid button at the top right) and set Clam numbers to Total. Choose Ropes left to go back to the countdown.
How do hearts work?
You have three hearts on each raft, and there’s no timer. A rope that isn’t part of the answer snaps and costs a heart. If all three are gone, you can Try again to start the raft fresh, or Continue with one more heart and keep the ropes you’ve tied.
How do hints work?
Each raft has three hints. Tap Hint below the board and one rope of the answer is tied for you. The number on the button shows how many are left. Hints never cost a heart, and every raft can be solved without them.
Is my progress saved? What if I leave in the middle of a raft?
A raft counts as finished the moment you solve it, and the next one opens. Every raft up to your first unfinished one is open, and finished rafts can be played again from Rafts.
If you leave halfway, the raft is waiting when you come back, with its ropes, hearts and hints as you left them (undo starts fresh). Restarting the raft, or running out of hearts and trying again, starts it from the beginning.
Progress is kept only on your iPhone. It isn’t synced between devices, and deleting the app deletes it.
What is the daily raft?
A new raft every day, the same one for every player. You’ll find it at the top of Rafts, with today’s date. It changes at midnight where you are. Once you’ve finished it, it gets a tick, and playing the daily raft doesn’t change your place in the 60 rafts.
Does it work with Reduce Motion and larger text?
Yes. With Reduce Motion on (Settings › Accessibility › Motion), the otters stop bobbing, ropes appear straight away, the water stays still and the raft falls asleep at once.
The rules, the menus and the results cards follow your text size (Settings › Display & Brightness › Text Size, or Larger Text in Accessibility). The board, the clam numbers, the raft grid and the buttons around the board keep a fixed size so the whole raft fits on screen. The game also works with VoiceOver.
I can’t hear any sound
The game follows your iPhone’s silent mode: when the iPhone is set to silent, the game is quiet too. Turn silent mode off and use the volume buttons to hear the kalimba notes and the night water. Its sound plays alongside your own music or podcasts.
Also check that Sound is on in Rafts. You can turn Sound and Haptics off there too.
